What Local 'School Day Off' or 'Banks Closed Day' Does Your Town Celebrates?

My son has no school this Friday, and ALL of next week. Two of the days off are for teacher in-service days, but not the rest. WHY? We live in a part of Louisiana that was heavily influenced by French traditions and culture. Next week we celebrate Mardi Gras. It is French for Fat Tuesday. Most local banks will be closed on Tuesday, as well of many of the smaller mom 'n pop businesses. A lot of King Cakes are being consumed right now. We might go to some of the parades on Mardi Gras too.

Wow you lucky (cheeks) I only have school off on next Monday and Tuesday because of fasching (I think this is Mardi Gras, isn't it? Nevermind it IS the same thing. My French is so rusty ) but it's not like we have less school brcause of that since we had classes on Saturday a few weeks ago. So we actually only have one day off. School system isn't the best here. I don't even know about other holidays but when the seniors of my school are doing their a-levels we mostly get a few days off which is awesome (cute)

In Louisiana, unlike the rest of the United States, we have parishes instead of counties. A couple years ago we lived in a city named Breaux Bridge, the Crawfish Capital of the World. Every year there is a weekend-long festival held in early May. There is a variety of music including Cajun Music and Zydeco. There is lots and lots of food. Most of them have crawfish as one of the ingredients. All public schools are off on the Friday off this festival, within St. Martin Parish. One of my favorite items to eat is crawfish boudin.

The only days I have off of school are the week I have for spring break, lol! Oh, the joys of uni. (cheeky)
Our university is closed Tueday, because the parades pass on the major road next to it. :( Most colleges are closed too.

Unfortunately for the kids where I live, most of our local celebrations are all celebrated during weekend days, but this is usually countered by our school district being crazy scared of the slightest bit of snow, so every year when the ground is white school is likely out.

The city of New Iberia, we lived there for about five years, in home of the Sugarcane Festival. All students are off for that day of school, in Iberia Parish, and it usually occurs the last weekend, including the Friday in September.

@Akod, we try to save up days for hurricane season.

We have a few public holidays here in Germany but there are also some regional (and religious) particularities. Upcoming, for example is Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) which is basically the highlight of carnival, much like Mardi Gras. It's actually not a holiday by law but most employers will grant their employees time off to celebrate.
Another one I remember from my time in school was that our fellow Muslim pupils were staying at home for "Eid al-Fitr", the Sugar Feast. Again, it's not a public holiday by law but schools and employers would be respectful to the people's belief and give them the day off so they can celebrate the end of fasting. ^_^

Honestly, I have no idea. aside from the obvious MLK day and other notable holidays, I can't really think of any local holidays.

I wouldn't know anyway since I work retail... and the only day we get off is Christmas Day lol. maybe when I get a better job, I'll be able to put a better answer here~

The kids are off of school, in Acadia Parish, when they have the annual Rice Festival, in the city of Crowley, but they do not get off for the Frog Festival in the city of Rayne, nor off for Oktoberfest in Roberts Cove.

Further west in Calcasieu Parish, schools and banks close for a three day weekend for Contraband Days, in Lake Charles. Yes, there is a week long celebration in remembrance of Louisiana pirates.

My school has a Cesar Chavez day, which I wasn't aware of until I started going here.
That's about all I can think of.
