Save Character Ideas

I need some ideas for fun ways to save the game. I think I'm settled with the player having to talk to a character to save. Kind of like how Mother 3 had the little advice frogs or how Middens had those save point creeps. I thought it would be a fun way to add some quirky dialogue before saving each time (the dialogue would preferably only play once and then subsequent saving at that point would bring the player straight to the save screen). What do you think? What sort of character or item should I use as the save point? My game is a sort of Sci-Fi thing that takes place in pretty modern times.

"Hey dad. You'Re the best dad in the world. Lemme save" (That's all I remember about Earthbound, I'm so sorry!). I've seen in a lot of hetagames (hetalia fangames, which is about the webmanga/anime hetalia) that they either use mochis or cats of the characters/protagonists with a cute sentence as save point. There was also something really cute in Pom Gets Wifi, a dog.

If you want to go for a different style and it's sci-fi you could also make the save characters some time- or dimension-travelling weird guys who help you and say weird stuff about the fabric of time, space, multiverse or such.

like some time traveler sitting on the toilet and you speak to him to save. Yes, a time traveler on the toilet, just like in deponia 3

"when will you stop pooping?"

Never played deponia, but always wanted to...

In-topic, another option would be an electronic device for saving, that's been used often of course, but fits the setting.

Maybe an in-universe explanation about quantum-entanglement and alternate realities? (As in transferring your consciousness to an identical body in an alternate timeline where you haven't died yet.) Just a thought. A bit out there though.
Could make for some fun dialogue if approached correctly.

On Phantasy Star II, you would record your progress in at the Data Center. Since the main villain had access to all data in the Algo Solar System, it made sense how the enemies knew your party's location all the time.
Later on, Xenogears used a slightly similar mechanic. So in the end you get a two-fold element that works as a game mechanic as well as a plot device.

EDIT: For a magic/medieval setting, maybe a magic tome where you would write your progress?

A machine that takes a DNA Sample, and a brain scan, your not 'saving' your prepping quick clones! With your current memories!

@iblamevictoria You should play Tales of the Drunken Paladin Book 3, it's like how you mentioned - talk to a character in order to save - except that there's more backstory, quest and plot to it. Plus, you'll enjoy the saving-conversation dialogue, aha! =D

I recall Alundra and FF9 had a book that you saved. The latter used a moogle that offered some dialogue. Books seem to be the fantasy one. If done well, a fourth wall breaking dialogue such as the last boss in Bravely Second could be done. You can use self-switches for dialogue on the save point.

Mine uses your typical save crystals but instead of being a random, unexplained thing that just exists in games, I've added some lore to them.
