[RMMV] Otherworld - In Development

Progress

Otherworld is a paranormal/horror game being developed for RMMV. It was originally started as a project in RMVX, and then was ported to RMVXA. The project officially migrated to RMMV in February, 2016, because of its possibilities as a developmental tool.

All updates for Otherworld will be made on its official blog and Twitter account. Major ones that add to the following will be updated here.

In the peaceful, rural village of Biddestone, Wiltshire, no one thought that anything untoward could happen until teenage girls started going missing. Search parties conducted by the village's police force and concerned locals were in vain. There were no clues, no signs of foul play, and no bodies. It was as if the girls had literally disappeared without a trace.

When Anna Carrera, daughter of the local Chief of Police, also similarly disappeared, the decision to hire renowned paranormal investigator Jack Urban was made in the hopes that he would be able to shed some well-needed light on a darkening situation.

Jack's discoveries about the missing girls would force him to face his deepest fears and question his core beliefs. He would have to travel through the Veil and into the Otherworld, but what would he be willing to sacrifice in exchange for answers?

Otherworld has a number of interesting - and not so interesting! - characters.

Jack Urban

Age: 24
Birthday: 20 July
Zodiac Sign: Cancer

Jack Urban is single! He doesn't have much luck with women. His last girlfriend dumped him two years ago and he hasn't quite recovered from it. Life in general has treated him poorly, so he's become somewhat cynical and misanthropic.

Jack is a Paranormal Investigator - or "Paranormalorist" as he prefers to call himself - who is hired to investigate some missing teenage girls in the quaint village of Biddestone, Wiltshire. The Chief of Police there told him over the phone that his own daughter, Anna, is missing and, since he's exhausted all resources and found absolutely no trace of her (or the other missing girls), he's starting to believe that something paranormal is happening.

What starts out as a routine investigation for Jack ends up being something far more sinister and terrifying than he could ever imagine. And in order to find out the answers, he must travel through the Veil and into the Otherworld, a place he thought he was quite knowledgeable on.

He must make a huge sacrifice if he is going to succeed!

Anna Carrera

Age: 17
Birthday: 10 January
Zodiac Sign: Capricorn

Anna Carerra is a down-to-earth, straight-A student. She needs to be: Her father is Biddestone's own Chief of Police and he expects - demands even! - that she excels at her studies. She's also a non-conformist and likes to rebel against her father sometimes, often dressing and acting promiscuously, but that doesn't make her "easy".

The day after her birthday, Anna vanished without a trace. The Chief of Police conducted a thorough week-long search for her, but turned up absolutely nothing. And eventually she, along with several other girls who similarly disappeared, was presumed dead. However, after Anna went missing, it appears there have been no further disappearances.

Anna awakens in a strange, otherworldly place. She quickly discovers that she's incorporeal and is deeply disturbed by this revelation. Is this a figment of her imagination or, worse, insanity? Is she dead and now wandering as a ghost? She has no recollection as to how she came to be here, but she's determined to find out. And to find a way back to her parents, who must be worried sick!

Swan

Age: Unknown
Birthday: 24 August
Zodiac Sign: Virgo

Swan (as she is known) is a mysterious, ethereal woman, about whom very little is known, as she keeps much of her past to herself. Because her appearance in Biddestone coincides with the very first girl going missing, she is Jack Urban's primary suspect until he realises that she's investigating the disappearances too.

Jack befriends her and she offers him sage advice and insight. They eventually decide to work as one team and eventually begin unravelling the mysteries surrounding the missing girls.

Otherworld has a range of features, including:

  • Play Multiple Characters: You can play as one of several characters. Each one has his/her own agenda and storyline, which eventually converges to a single one. Each character also has his/her own rich background and role to play at the endgame.
  • Karma System: Everything you say and do in Otherworld is monitored; every decision you make, every action and reaction, every interaction, and every statement affects your "karma". It also influences how people and other beings react to you, depending on their own alignments in relation to yours.

Note: The Karma System is only available for Anna, but may be further expanded later for the other characters as well.
  • Unique Puzzles: Many of the puzzles in Otherworld are designed to test your knowledge on mythology and the paranormal, and your intellect. Sometimes you'll really have to think "out of the box" to solve them. A number of them (will) also have a moralistic theme.
  • Personality Traits – Each person has distinct personality traits; some that Anna will meet also have mental disorders, such as paranoia or schizophrenia. Anna will have some of her own as well. I’m not sure if or how this will integrate into the game, but it’s an idea I was playing with to tie in with the karma scores as well.
  • Skillsets – Different types of skills: Passive (always on), Inherited (natural abilities) and Learned (skills learned along the way).
  • Alternate Endings: The actual ending you'll see depends on your choices (within the Karma System), so you may have a different ending each time you play if you do things differently. There are presently 5 endings in Otherworld.

Here are some of the in-game screenshots. More will be added over time.

This is the main Title Screen. The character is randomized so each time the screen is refreshed it might be a different one.

These are 2 of 5 Game Over screens (depending on ending and Karma). These don't have a menu set up on-screen yet.

All of the videos I've done for the project are now terribly out-of-date, so I'll create and upload some more up-to-date ones in the near future.

I've created many of the resources in Otherworld myself using Daz 3D Studio, but some will be packs already available for RMMV. I'll compile a list when I've decided which of these packs I'll be using.

These are mostly credits for the Plugins I've used in Otherworld. It'll be expanded properly later.

  • Alternative Status Layout -- Otherworld exclusive.
  • Karma System -- Otherworld exclusive.
  • Map/Compass HUD -- Available here or here.

A special thanks to my wife, Tina, for her unswerving support, tolerance and encouragement throughout all of my projects, notably Otherworld and whose insight and input are greatly appreciated.

Otherworld is presently in its second phase pre-alpha testing, so no downloads are available as yet. As soon as the third phase pre-alpha testing is finished, the first official Alpha releases will be ready for playtesting.

More information and updates can be found on Otherworld's official blogsite.
