On piracy

In an ideal world, piracy would not exist.
However this is not an idea world, so here is the question.
What would you prefer happen with ties to piracy, (Note: Stopping piracy is implied already, piracy hurts alot of people, but that is not the point of this question) For example, If a pirate does pirate rpg maker, would you rather he release only free games, release paid games but use the funding to buy the rpg maker, or for rpg maker to release more intensive counter measures against piracy (Should they exist in the first place, i don't rely know honestly)

I'll say what I do whenever the issue of piracy is brought up, you can't stop it, but you can find creative ways to encourage people not to do it, or do a F2P model, you got options.

Here's an insightful read by yours truly about my Company's philosophy on piracy and the psychological appropriation behind it.

Ideally, I wouldn't want someone with a pirated copy of the engine putting out any sort of game. Realistically, I'd want them to only release a commercial game if the profit is at some point put towards buying a legitimate copy of the engine. If someone can't afford the engine nowadays, all they really need to do is wait for the next bundle site that decides to offer RM tbh. It happens pretty frequently.

( Obligatory: This forum does not support piracy. (cheeky) )

I have bought every RPGmaker I have used to release a game, and every DLC resource pack I have on my PC.

That anyone calls me a thief is both hilarious and misinformed. The only thing I've stolen are people's hearts and minds.

I'm with Amy on this one, and I'm sure Biz is on the same track I just never read his article lol. If you can't afford RM then wait for the next bundle when it has a big discount on it. That being said when I was younger I downloaded a pirated copy of hmm I think XP, but probably 2k3, I only ever used it personally and never released anything with it, I wanted to have an idea of what it was about, but nowadays this is not needed as there are trial downloads now and it should give plenty of time to know what it's all about and make a short game with it. I have also heard that the official company & forums know how to check if a pirated engine was used to make a game, so to be safe use the trial until you can afford the full product.

Personally i agree with you, piracy hurts game developers, this being said, i have pirated before, but that is usually when they refuse to release into the united states. Over all, my favorite model, is the donate model, where you donate what you think the project is worth or what you could afford. Sure there are lots of people that will pay the minimum amount, but most of the fans will pay even more then the amount they would have set.
