So... my buddy gave me this awesome idea for a pokemon game, and sadly the only RPG Maker with a working pokemon system is RPG Maker XP. So I'm downloading that, and making a new Pokemon game!

How do y'all feel about using other versions of RPG Maker when a new one is out. Do you feel like the old ones become obsolete, or do you feel that the older versions are more stable because they have more plugins/resources?

A few months ago I got RPG Maker 2003 for almost nothing (I think it was about 3€ actually) and I've been messing around with it ever since. Kinda the same I did when MV came out. I'm not one to make many games. In fact I've never finished one. Having all those different versions of RM allows me to see and try where I can realize my ideas best. However, if I'm ever going to make a game to release it's gonna be with the most recent installment of RM. Newer does not always mean better though. :P

I just recently got xp and I like it. It's not like vx ace but you have a few different possibilities with the maker. I agree with @reisen just with mv vx ace and xp because I really like them. I like the old ones even if the old ones have smaller grafics and may not be this stable. It depends on what one wants to do to choose the maker. Its enough to choose from

The changes done to the Engine with MV is such a major change in the right direction so i feel like it is worth overcoming all issues currently with the editor.

I own Ace XP and MV, I opened XP once and have over 1000 hours on Ace. I don't really like XP except for the layering of the tiles, but I have nothing against the other editors, and I don't believe they will ever become obsolete lol.

There are things in RMXP that still makes it one memorable and usable engine. As far as I know, it has a library of many great scripts. It is just that they're too old you can't find them all now. The bad thing with RMXP though is that the XP SDK is badly written.

There are 2 things or one (It can be done with MV unlike the VX series I believe, but I'm not sure yet --blanket on the bed--) that made me love RMXP and wished they brought it back on MV by giving (Weapon & Armure's own parametres) as an option in MV which it's up to us to use it or not.

I have a sort of Nintendo way of thinking, In which I use the previous generation's tools as they are mostly optimized and are familiar to work with.

The good thing with XP is its library of fixes, Online SDK, Fixed SDK and library of scripts. But the thing that really disgusts me is its low FPS. It has a fix that changes the game player to the Ace player, but the sadness doesn't end there, since optimization of the said engine destroys all of your assets and won't work properly.

I own all the RPG Makers [except the console ones and the illusive RM95] And throughout them all, I have my favorite 'feature' list;
RM2k3: The SV battler animation system, there is so much you can do with this version of RPG makers side view battle system. And Every Weapon in your game could have a unique Sprite/Animation if you were so inclined to do an art.
RMXP: 3 Layer Tile Mapping, using this and the event layer together in harmony, with the exception of just flat out parralax mapping, is the most detailed you can get with the basic mapping features found throughout the RPG Maker series. As well as the Fog option.
RMVX/VXA: I honestly haven't used this one much. When it came out I tried it, but it simplified the tile mapping and I wasnt fond of the suddenly chibieverything characters. I like the Icons. >.>;
RMMV: I would have tucked this under RMXP as it was introduced there but; Scripting, Being able to do so much more than just the base engine is amazing and its what a game design engine needs. Aside from that, Portability. I don't use them, but Mac OSX support is great to see, Exporting to HTML5 and from there being able to release to any platform [that can handle HTML5] is fantastic as the mobile world is ever growing.

On topic; I still play with the older RPG Makers, I like them, they've provided me with a lot of entertainment and joy over the past 15 years. But for now, I am primarily sticking with MV. It's still got the new software scent, and With the way they have it, I think seeing expansion on what the editor can do naturally will expand. [Like weapon animations... Why only 6 user defined slots? 5 if you count the fact that a book is in slot 1.]

I think I was going somewhere with this... but it's New Years eve... and... rum drinks. :D
