How to create a 3rd type of combat?

regards I will try to explain myself as best I can.

I understand that there are 2 types of lateral and frontal combats. In agreement. But is it possible to create interaction sequences in the map plane? I mean npc that are on the map so that it can be attacked and I enter its range of motion, with some predetermined grip sequence.

but when this happens do not send me to a lateral or frontal battle but allow me through a sequence of buttons to release me from the npc on the same map (as an escape option)

as it happens in the clock tower, personally the best game of the snes.

My intention is to create a game with more history than combats, Is it possible to do this or should I add something else to the mv? all help is welcome. Thank you

If you have an interesting story with choices that matter, items needed to be gathered and puzzles needed to be solved it's definitly possible to have less combat action.
