Do games inspire you to make/work on your project?

So, I haven't touched my project in a little bit because I've been really busy. However, my buddy just convinced me to buy Dragon's Dogma from steam. While playing it, I get this sudden urge to start making my game, and since I've been playing the game, I've worked on my game more than I have in the past few weeks.

This being said, has anyone else experienced this with any games you play? Do playing games help you get inspired to create your game?

Yes, it is a good source of inspiration, seeing what ideas others have put into their games. SRPGs have this effect on me more then others however.

It is. Everytime I don't know what to do i watch lps or streams of older rpg maker games and boost my inspiration and motivation. But fe when i finished playing certain ones or even non rpg maker games (life is strange and beyond two souls) I was flashed and had an easier time making. Like "I've seen that. I want that. It's gonna be awesome!".

It inspires me and hinders me at the same time. If I play a new game, I may want to incorporate new and improved methods into the game. It can be a roundy roundy experience for me trying to settle for which inspiration to use. @_@

It does. Compelling storyline and addicting battle is usually the driving force for a game to inspire me make a game myself. Phantasy Star was one of the influential games in my life.

Yeah games and anime definitely inspire me--well, anything can inspire me really. real life events, nature, dreams.... I never know what is gonna give me a burst of creativity.

Reading Macro's ideas for our game inspires me as well.

Yes, games always inspire me, in fact sometimes I avoid it for the same reason Macro has mentioned because you get ideas you want to incorporate but it may take days to implement in your own project, taking away from building what you already have in mind lol. Though if I am at a stand still with my project I will play a few games to try and get the motivation back up and running.

The games that inspired me the most were originally not offered online. They came in book format, and you and your friends had to use your own imaginations to create and play the games. Sometimes the lack of technological advancement leads to greater creativity.

A few buddies of mine got me into D&D and a lot of the creatures in my game will be based off of that, as well as I noticed almost all games have some sort of basis with it XD

That is where I learned a lot about mythology and different religions before I really got into religion and mythology.

There are games played that have inspired a lot of my 'not going to do.' I love Finally Fantasy X, but I will not make long non-skipable scenes, that cannot be removed if already seened.

I use games as a litmus test for what's good and what's not as Jay said. However, in determining what is good, it's a lot harder. I don't play games as much these days - instead, I listen to people on YouTube and see how they react to certain aspects. For example, if they say something like "and this is where it gets really cool" then I know to thoroughly analyze that particular aspect.

However, if that statement is not said, then it takes a little longer. Fallout's a big one, as Chibievil can testify to my ramblings on :P basically, New Vegas is an amazing game when you consider the company only had a year to make it, and when it is patched up and the critical bugs removed. It focuses heavily on characters and story (you could argue gameplay as well, but F3 has the same gameplay apart from a few changes eg weapon condition, requirements, perks, etc), but I'm going to be focusing on characters and gameplay. Characterisation and the core game design are what made it so good, I think.

Disclaimer: the game was really unpopular when it was first released, given the huge density of game breaking bugs. It's great now, though.

I'll just pretend that "project" doesn't necessarily mean "game" and say that other games and their soundtracks definitely inspire me to go work on something. For example, I managed to finish a song that had been lying around for a few days, untouched by me, after playing some Tales of Xillia and listening to its soundtrack. Most of the time I get some rough ideas for a song by just playing a game casually and whistling along with the soundtrack. :3

I absolutely experience this. It's kind of bad, actually, because sometimes I'll be working on something very happily and then I play a game of a different genre or listen to some music with a unique feel to it and I have an idea for an entirely new project that I suddenly want to work on instead. I see something I love in somebody else's work and I go, "I could use that!!" and then, chaos XD; But it certainly does move me to create, that's undeniable!

Personally I let myself be inspired by RPGs of all types, irrespectively of what other people think about some of them.
As long as the story is good and it has good main characters, why not? Off course I'm talking from my personal point of view.
One of them serves me even as the Base for the RPG that I try to make.

absolutely, but if it's too close to my game i'll get disheartened. booted up witcher 3 the other day, a bunch of shit i thought i invented was in that game. but that just makes me work harder as well, so i guess the answer is 'yes' across-the-board.

I know wat you mean wiht @polar_fawkes and when you realize that tho your abilities are not enough, then you learn new Things just because you want to make the whole game alone . Is it not so? That was also my way untill jet.
