(I didn't see this thread yet so I made it, apologies if it already exists!)

does anybody here have a Discord account? I just made one today 'causes an old friend of mine uses it. it seems pretty cool so far, love the plethora of emoticons there are to choose from.

so, if you are a big fan of Discord, can you tell me what you like about it?

P.S. - for those who dont know, Discord is an IM program like Skype. it also seems to have the ability to display what game you're playing to your friends, though I haven't tried this option yet

I do not have Discord. In my mindset, "Why have another media option?" I can see who is playing or using different software applications, with my Steam contacts. I can be PMed on Steam, here, and Facebook. I hardly ever use my Twitter or Skype accounts. With Skype, I can see if someone messaged me through my email. Why one more way? I personally am not probably going to set up a Discord account.

Yeah I wasn't going to either but it was either Discord or Skype in order for me to be able to talk with an old friend, and unfortunately Skype always lags/crashes so I chose Discord in the end (plus I had already uninstalled Skype anyways).

I totally agree though, it's annoying having so many. I have like... Battle.net, Steam, Origin, Discord, and previously Skype as well. at least I don't use Origin much anymore...

Mmm... we have the chat topic, but not one for Discord overall.

I pretty much ditched my other chat options for Discord, lol. I never used Steam/Facebook/Twitter or any of those chats much, and Skype was always lagging, so this is a nice alternative.

My username on there is Amy#0590 if anyone wants to message me or add me as a friend.

I'll grab Discord for a non gaming messenger. Might as well get in on the new trend, since people are finally realizing Skype is %$#@. (thumbsup)

Discord is fun^^ Better than skype, a lot better. It sometimes does send my messages twice but atleast it LOADS and SHOWS me the messages unlike skype. I've had some annoying issues with skype lately and bwüahrg. I came to Discord because Biz pointed me there. and I like the interface and loading screens.

I find Discord exceptionally useful and much easier to use (in general) to things like Skype, TS and Mumble. It is actually quite good for gaming communities and much easier to set permissions for things unlike things like TS which can confuse you if you don't know what you're looking for.

I use Discord all the time. Feel free to add me: Lore#5542

Could be a good replacement for Skype, but yet another messaging service, in a world overfilled with messaging services. I like that it is gamer focused, but it seems to really want to ride that wagon and that's about it. Though I like that it gives you your own 'server' your own little space. I dunno, if I meet people who use the software I might actually use it. Otherwise I see it quickly going the way of Skype for me and becoming another unused account.

You do make a valid point. I personally prefer Discord over other messaging services, simply because it's easier to navigate and I've never had an issue with it. But it's each to their own. :)

I come from the Era of AOL, and chat rooms and all of that, now were in the age of Forums and Social media. I miss chat rooms and AIM and all that, VOIP services are great now and what, I dunno Maybe I've forgotten how to socialize since then lol.

I do indeed miss things like MSN Chat, MSN Messenger, et al. Part of me is also happy that forums are making a resurgence. But yes, I do understand completely where you are coming from. :)

I dunno, I realed that most of the time unless I message someone I don't ever actually talk to them on messengers. ._. so after a while it became whats the point. XD

Discord is FAR MORE better than any other similar solution, like Skype, TS or even Mumble.

They are investing on local servers, decreasing lag in voice chat.

With a litte more than one year of existence it managed to have a lot of features, making it in pair even with some community networks and forums (the very organized administration/moderation of servers, multi channels, bots to helping with stuff, and etc).

I even created a server for all portuguese speaking makers (its in my signature), and most of them are enjoying a lot the software. Its well received here.

if a chatbox was the original idea and you just want to keep it to chat, i find an irc channel may be the simplest solution. just a thought

Literally the only reason I use Skype is if I want to screenshare with somebody. Otherwise I just don't bother ^_^''
