Character Costume Design

What do you do when you design a character's costume?

  • I use real-world logic. Winged creatures DO NOT wear 3-piece suits.

  • I use more loose logic... Have that floating hair! :D

  • I don't think. :| (And probably should!)

For me it's different depending on if their outfit changes. if they keep the same outfit throughout the game then I want it to match their personalities and offer visual aid on who they are as a person. A gloomy or character would wear dark colors. While a much happier character would wear bright colors.

However if their outfit changes throughout the story then I want them to wear clothing that is suited to what is happening in the story, and what the character needs. A person who came from a farm will have simple clothes first, but if they end up going through a war zone they might change their outfit to have armor or wear fatigues.

A character should never just have any random clothing set put on them without any thought. It just makes it seem like there was no effort put into them and lowers the chances of people liking them.

I consider my character's occupation/class first and foremost and then their personality. Like, unique accents for a costume/outfit that only fits that character but still a realistic outfit. So like, one costume might be a long military coat on one character, but would have unique accents that set it apart from being ordinary, unique coloring, REALLY lavish threaded designs and buttons etc. that would just look downright weird on another character with the same class/occupation. Sorry if this is hard to understand. I also consider color theory for the ensemble to make it more appealing. So, an elf with greens and browns and reds or a princess with long black hair dark purple dress, blue eyes.

I tend to put a lot of thought into the culture of the places I design, and that determines what sort of buildings they have (if any--there are some tent-dwelling nomads in my game), what objects decorate the background, what the NPCs are doing, and what sort of clothes people wear. Main characters have to stand out so it's important that what they're wearing is distinctive, but it should be appropriate to the culture they come from, their job, and/or their personality.
