So many times we hear, "Can I help you?", but it may not be the optimal way to ask this question.
Firstly, it has only three possible answers, which are: yes, no, and I don't know.
Secondly, the word 'can' often means the ability to do something.
Third, even though a person 'can' do something, they may not desire to do it.
A little better way to ask is, "May I help you?". 'May' is a way of asking permission to assist.
To get more thinking out of the person the question is being asked to ask, "How can I help you?" or "How may I help you?" These questions show deeper levels of concern and desire to have slightly higher form of interaction.
