Patrico: To the West

PAC918

Towns Guard
I've mentioned a couple time across a few threads that I'm working on a project with my children. Both girls ages 11 and 9 will learn my process of game development and how to use RPG Maker VX Ace and MV. They will also learn a little bit of coding but that's more for the oldest. Together we have been working on a game and I had another project that I was working on solo. This allowed me to get things done on my own time then be more prepared for teaching the girls. Anyhow, I have now messed around with MV enough and have decided we'll use it as the engine going forward and that I will mix our projects into one!

So, I can now introduce the world to Patrico: To the West (title WIP but it works).

The Prince of the North is set to marry the Princess of the South as arranged by their respective Kings. An informal meet was to take place in the Neutral Forest just 3 days after the plan was made however someone doesn't want the North and South to be united and the young couple are ambushed. The Prince has been kidnapped and the Princess left unconscious upon the forest floor. A nearby forest dwelling, riverbank residing and free spirit, Patrico wakes up to the commotion of the ambush. Patrico only catches a glimpse of the Prince being taken away as he rushed over to give aide to the fallen Princess. Troops from both territories arrive and Patrico is arrested after his story was dismissed by commanding officers of the North and South. Less than a day goes by and Patrico is sentenced to death which would take place in mere hours unless the Prince arrives or the Princess awakens to confirm his testimony. Patrico must now hurry to escape the dungeon tower of the North and solve the mystery on his own while dodging northerners and southerners alike. Patrico will experience the West for the first time and hopefully land a lead as to the whereabouts of the missing Prince or the bandits that hurt the Princess.

The North has a 7 floor prison tower and Patrico will start on the 4th floor. He is amongst a few other captives that share the same fate as he. Options to go up or down present themselves but once one is chosen there is no going back. Going up is a shorter trip but at a much harder difficulty and with more challenging puzzles. The downward route takes longer but will be the easier choice.

The North took Patrico because their prince is missing and while South is a victim as well they have an unconscious, yet living, princess. Once Patrico escapes the North's tower he will quickly be met by some Southern soldiers that are patrolling the Neutral Forest. They capture Patrico and deliver him to King Jhyno who can't believe the North let him go. Jhyno sentences Patrico to death and has him placed in their dungeon prison. Jyhno also sends word to the "peace keepers" about the North and how they have conspired with Patrico to cause harm to his only child, the princess. He also tells them that his southern territory will no longer adhere to the old treaty.

Patrico, once again, must escape in a hurry. The southern dungeon prison is below ground and up is the only way out. Or is it? Being held in the lowest level (5), Patrico finds himself alone and teaming up to escape is not an option. His surroundings yield nothing of use and no hope. The journey upwards is going to be a tough expedition as Patrico will encounter several beasts and living experiments created by a rumored "mad scientist." This escape mission entales wave after wave of what seems to be an endless string of fight to the death matches. Its dark and creepy but every cell must be explored as the way out is unknown.

After the long process of escaping the southern dungeon Patrico makes his way to the West, a place he's never been. The West has been blocked off by a fallen mountain for over a century. Patrico is immediately identified as an outsider and needs to find a way to make friends or will have an extremely difficult time continuing his investigation. Shops won't sell or buy from him. He's not welcome at the inn or tavern. Residents are not afraid to inflict damage upon him if he nears their homes or businesses.

We will still introduce our twin Wizards known as "The Twizards" and they'll actually help out in multiple parts of the game as well. Patrico is my "franchise" character like Mario or Link. He will be in a series of games that all play a part in the overall story. My real name is Patrick so the name Patrico just sort of came about one day many years ago when I was still in school and writing out storylines to the future games I was going to make, LoL.

Systems/Features:
  • Crafting (duh)
  • Alchemy (minimal at first)
  • Magic Learning (WIP)
  • Characters age throughout series (5+ games)
  • Random (always different) dungeon level!
Credits so far:
  • LTN Games (for title banner)

Sounds like a fun project, the little ones always have a plethora of creative ideas so that will set this game off right there. The story is sounding right as well, should be an epic adventure to restore peace between the two sides, hopefully these bandits get the justice they deserve and the prince comes home safely.

This story sounds awesome - I really like how the story sets you up to be an "enemy" of both sides. It really gives it an element of real danger; everyone's out to get you. Anything in particular you'd like critiqued, or would like feedback on in particular? So far what I see is a great baseline, and it's awesome that you're getting the young ones involved - that will have quite an impact on them in years to come, I'm sure. Good for you for all that bonding, too!

Thanks guys!
I'm going to get the opening post more organized and provide a bit more information as well over the next couple of days. I've been cropping some images of characters, database stuff and even have some videos showing the girls making maps. Critique all the way through if you'd like. The kids won't be reading anything here unless I have something specific that I want them to see.

I took the kids with me on a trip to "game development land" and we were there for several hours over the last few days. I've edited the OP to reflect. Check the story continuation!
