Are Educational Games in RPG Maker a good idea?

I used mathematical battlers. I just put special conditions on correct battlers and the incorrect battlers. There all kinds of games and non-games that can be made with the MV engine. There are many educational applications. Can teach basically any subject.

@Jay is right, this is quite a reasonable thing to do. I knew someone who used RPG Maker to make a game that helped teach children in Japan the 1,000 most common Kanji characters as part of a class project. If you put your mind to it, almost anything is possible.

I think anything can be made into a game, really. the only thing that limits us is our imagination!

I remember when I was a kid, I grew up with the Jumpstart series. it was basically a game composed of a bunch of minigames that taught stuff like how to do simple math, understanding change (vending machine minigame) and just a bunch of random stuff. it was super fun, really.

I still think these things can be fun in games at times, because it will usually catch me off guard lol. stuff like a riddle or a sudden simple addition question makes me like oh shoot! I really need to think about this! xD

in all honesty, I believe there is an audience out there for anything you can create, so just let your imagination guide you!

absolutely this can be done! you could have each turn of a battle show a message with a simple arithmetic problem, and display 3-6 answers to choose from. you'll have to familiarize yourself with the non-educational aspects to the engine first, but there is and has always been a market for excellent educational games! the money just went elsewhere around '95.

worth researching: Super Solvers series, Gizmos and Gadgets, Mario Teaches Typing.

No such thing as a bad game idea in RPGmaker, it's all in the execution.

Absolutely, RPG Maker games can be educational, but you've gotta deliver it in an appealing manner that will keep the audience captive.

To add to fawke's suggestions, I recommend researching Reader Rabbit, was one of the best educational games I played as a grade-schooler.

@Micro LOL of course you would mention Jumpstart, I didn't even have to look hahaha!

I actually did something like this with ACE, but it was to learn Hiragana and Katakana, though I never finished it. It helped me learn characters, but I don't know about how other people would take it. I showed it to a couple but they seemed bored with the concept, so I dropped it and am still trying to figure out of a more fun way.

I remember some of the old edugames that my dad gave me were pretty fun. I wonder if @MinisterJay heard of Cave of the Word Wizard? lol

the reader rabbit series was incredible dude. i'm going to play the devil's advocate here re: no such thing as a bad game idea in RPGM: first person games would be a bitch. real-time combat is much better accomplished via IG Maker or one of its competitors. to be completely honest, the OP's game concept might be easier to execute in Visual Basic, but you'd have to create your own graphics.

Well yeah I wouldn't attempt anything that requires 3D space like a first person shooter in RPGmaker.

However, action games are fun as balls to make with this engine, I maintain (loosely) one of the most notorious for both it's complexity asnd that it's 99% evented.
dude. crazy game man. that mustve taken so goddamn long to make. but the fact remains, if you're not some thizzed out rave simian w insane skills, ig maker would be easier for action :P

I was under the impression IG Maker was impossible to acquire.

I have tried to both legally buy it and illegally acquire it.

All I got was some lame-o viruses and a sour grapes attitude.

I am gonna pick up GG Maker at some point. (When it's on an insane special, most likely)

I am thinking of creating math based games in RPG Maker MV. Using the current battle system to show questions and if the user answers the right one they would cause damage to the enemy. The question is, does it fit in RPG Maker? Does the theme have to be changed from a regular game?
Oh I love this idea!
As everyone above has said, there is never a bad game idea. (glee) It's all about the way you implement it. (wink)
I've made a few educational games myself actually back in previous RPG Makers. (cool)

I may be tempted to mess around with this idea myself now. Thanks for posting. (glad)
