Admins Engagements?

How much do you feel an admin should be engaged in the community? Do you think he/she should be active in all the conversations, or do you think the admin should focus on the forum's admin work vs. being engaged in the community. Example, Post less, update more, or post more, update less?

I agree with @Forgottensage. From personal experience, I find a forum more inviting when the staff, admins included, all engage in the conversations as peers. To me, when a forums staff focuses on the moderation side of things too much it makes me feel like they care more about their positions than the actual community, which is very off-putting.

Yup, I agree. I think it's important to get updates done, but not to the point that the community feels like they don't really know you. It's important that members know the staff is approachable. (cute)

Balance is definitely important! I know it made me feel more welcome/special when colored names were talking to me, and I felt more comfortable around the forums when I saw that you guys were nice/friendly people.

Personally, I think Admins should mostly "Keep it professional.", meaning be friendly and respectful, but not get TOO caught up in personal discussions. That's not saying they shouldn't avoid being active at all though! I just say that so they can avoid uncomfortable/complicated situations if one of their non-staff friends happens to need reprimanding. Also, some people don't like when an "admin clique" starts and they know "well the admin likes that guy, so..."

What goes in the private Staff areas is a different story of course, since the Staff usually is (mostly) all friends anyway, which is already apparent on here. I see no problem with that either! You know a Staff is good when they are people that all like each other already. ^_^

I think it's okay if the admin stays behind the scenes and does forum work, as long as there is someone just as competent to take their role and be in the discussion with the community. If that makes sense? Like we have two admins Sage & Xyphien, if Xyphien had to step down and do only maintenance work etc, then sage would have to step in and make the posts talk to members etc. In our case, I can understand Xyphien stepping down and doing only maintenance because he is so busy with the real life stuff, so it would make sense for him to focus on the back end of the community when he does get free time and not replying to posts taking away from the maintenance. As other were saying though it is really nice to have an admin who can balance themselves and still feels like a part of the community, it does bring a nice aura to the community as a whole, IMO lol.

Administration serve as leaders of a forum. Their purpose is to make sure that the goals that they set are worked towards and reached. If their goals are relational focused, they should interact a lot with the members. Some leaders can be friendly, without being friends. If there is an uncomfortable message to be delivered, it may be optimal to send in a moderator, or other representative. A successful administrator puts successful and potentially successful team members, within the organization. This leader is focused on making other's succeed so that the goals and dreams of the organization can be fulfilled.

I recommend not looking at your personal stats, but on the growth of the forum. If your goals are being reached or surpassed, then you are doing awesome. If your goals are not being reached, with your creativity, you will discover what to do, or who/what could be added or redefined. By bringing up these questions, you are the administrator that you strive to be.

Sometimes, the sense of duty might become problematic and makes you do what you think you must do. If you enjoy engaging with the community, please allow yourself to do so! If you are really excited about this new feature you're working on, feel free to work on it behind the scenes. The rest has been said already: you don't have to do all of it alone. Keep enjoying what you do and build this great community, both with your admin work and by engaging with what and who's already here.

I guess, I qualify as one of the ones who did not know the others... (smile)

I've a good history with Forums where Staff actively enage members and mods on an equal level.

VX.net post-calamity was possibly my most positive experience on a forum, though that may have been because I'd done so much for the place I was above banne.

This place comes really damn close though!

Well THIS post was misleading. I thought someone was getting married.
You and me both. I thought sage x Xyphien was a thing, and I was getting ready to toss some rice. :C
ROFL, not even close. He lives in Cali, and I in... wherever the government decides to ship me too. XD If anything, it'd be my buddy and Sage. @sage even calls him daddy sometimes. P.S. Your right though I'm not straight

Back on topic... this post wasn't entirely just about me, I wanted to know how the community felt about active admins vs. inactive admins community wise, and it seems that there is a clear bias towards active admins :) Which means I'll try my best to be as active in the community as possible. I know I've fallen off the activity lately during this deployment, but I'll be trying to post as much as I can, when I can :D

I've been trying to get the smiley box to show up automagically to help people like me who are too lazy to click the emoticon every time to see the smileys, but I have had no luck with that. Also, rofl XD
