Free Paint Apps for Beginner Artists?

Hello artists,

As a Mac owner it's kind of sad that I don't have Microsoft Paint like I used to back when I had RPG Maker XP; it was so easy to just save the default images on the desktop, edit the colors, and then plug the "new" icons back in. Is there anything similar to Paint that is Mac compatible, for us newbie artists that just want to tweak MV's default sprites and tilesets?

These may work. :-)

http://www.aseprite.org/
http://www.piskelapp.com/
http://www.gimp.org/

Hope one of those is useful for you! :-)
I thought I saw that Aseprite only had a free trial, then paid continuation after that; can anyone confirm/deny?

Any preferences from this list, too? I can say I've used GIMP before and it just did not operate correctly on my Mac. No idea why, tried reinstalling and everything, but to no avail. I'll be trying out one of the other two, though, thanks @Kerux!

There's also paint.net (another photoshop clone), mischief(a drawing program with infinite zoom), and fire alpaca (a SAI clone).
I'm not sure if the first two are Mac compatible, but fire alpaca is.

I also don't know if Mischief would be good for sprite art (or even able to do it) because of its infinite zoom.

Paint.net isn't compatible with Mac, but I believe Mischief has a Mac version.

Not sure why that would be--I use a Macbook Pro, and GIMP is my best spriting friend. :)
