You can also make grids in gimp like this:
View>show grids
Picture/canvas>configurate grids
(not sure if this is the right translation since my gimp isn't in English but still it works XD)
Prefer this instead of copying and pasting a sample of the size of the tile or sth like that XD Anyways great tutorial (cheeky)

The built in app grids don't function as good as a customized on for RPG Maker in my experience on Photoshop. It CAN work, but if I want pixel precise precision for RPG Maker alignments, a custom one is more helpful. The thin grid lines aren't exactly one pixel wide so it can be a pain sometimes. If there is a way to make them 1 pixel wide though that would be amazing..
