Sounds like an awsome idea actually I would love to see this in action. Though it would be a tough one to accomplish considering the lack of modern/sci fi assets for this style of game. I really hope to see you do some stuff with this and hear anything more you come up with. I'll be following to keep track :)
I like the idea of two worlds connected and dependent. Maybe you should ask yourself about the type of characters that will permeate this world. I think most people would work in "The Cloud" from home, probably entertainment and even sex can stay on that level as well. This means maybe society and the real world is crumbling.
There's this movie called Surrogates. It's not a good movie by any length, but the state in which everyone that lives connected gets is at least interesting. There's also "Ready Player One", but I'm guessing you already know this one.
I guess most fitting would be a story about overthrowing the Company that runs things, or maybe working for said company and trying to stop terrorists. In the end, you realize you're working for a system that only permeates poverty for people and power to few.
It's a cliché, but can be well done with good character development.
